Elasticity and hydrodynamic properties of ”doped solvent dilute” lamellar phases

چکیده
The equilibrium fluctuations and weakly out-of-equilibrium relaxation properties of « doped solvent » dilute lamellar phases are investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, in the low-frequency. long-wavelength limit. The physical system of interest is a three-component smectic A lyotropic liquid cry~tal where surfactant bilayers infinite in extent are periodically stacked along one direction in space and separated by a colloidal solution. Two experimentally relevant modes are found in the lowest frequency part of the fluctuation

The role of added polymer in dilute lamellar surfactant phases
We study theoretically the effect of adding polymer to the dilute lamellar phase of surfactant solutions. The polymer, assumed semidilute and in a good solvent, is taken to have a repulsive or attractive interaction with surfactant bilayers, but has no other effect on their properties. Such polymers can mediate an attractive or repulsive interaction between bilayers which we combine with pre-ex...
متن کاملMagnetic nanorods confined in a lamellar lyotropic phase.
The dilute lamellar phase of the nonionic surfactant C 12EO 5 was doped with goethite (iron oxide) nanorods up to a fraction of 5 vol %. The interaction between the inclusions and the host phase was studied by polarized optical microscopy (with or without an applied magnetic field) and by small-angle X-ray scattering. We find that, when the orientation of the nanorods is modified using the magn...
متن کاملSurface relaxation of lyotropic lamellar phases
– We study the relaxation modes of an interface between a lyotropic lamellar phase and a gas or a simple liquid. The relaxation is found to be qualitatively different from those of both simple liquids and single-component smectic-A liquid crystals. It is governed by a non-inertial, diffusive mode whose decay rate increases quadratically with wavenumber, |ω| = Aq. The coefficient A depends on th...
متن کاملEquilibrium Onions ?
– We demonstrate the possibility of a stable equilibrium multi-lamellar (“onion”) phase in pure lamellar systems (no excess solvent) due to a sufficiently negative Gaussian curvature modulus. The onion phase is stabilized by non-linear elastic moduli coupled to a polydisperse size distribution (Apollonian packing) to allow space-filling without appreciable elastic distortion. This model is comp...
متن کاملOptical properties of spin-coated Er-doped Ga1As39S60 Chalcogenide thin films
Spin-coating of Chalcogenide glasses is a cost-effective and flexible method to produce thin films applicable in photonics. In this paper Er was doped into Ga1As39S60 glass by melt quenching technique and solutions for spin coating were prepared from glass powders dissolved in Propylamine and Ethylendiamine. Substrates used were microscopic slides (refractive index of about 1.51). Applied layer...
